Orange Park Medical Center is pleased to provide a convenient, low cost Lung Cancer Screening to the community to help detect lung cancer earlier. They are the first hospital in Clay County to offer such a screening. This is a safe and comfortable way to get screened for lung cancer before any symptoms may be present.

Each screening is done in a comfortable setting with a CT lung scan -- a painless, noninvasive procedure that provides detailed three-dimensional images of your lungs. The entire appointment should take approximately 20 minutes. The radiologist will then review the low dose x-ray images for any suspicious spots that need further attention. The nurse navigator will provide same or next day results, answer any questions, and if needed, recommend further testing or treatment.

Individuals interested in the screening should call Orange Park Medical Center’s Consult-A-Nurse at 1-800-889-3627. They will answer a brief questionnaire to make sure the lung cancer screening is right for them before an
appointment is scheduled. Criteria is based on the National Lung Screening Trial (NLST) guidelines. Lung cancer screenings within these guidelines are currently recommended by the American College of Chest Physicians and the American Society of Clinical Oncology.

  • For people between the ages of 55 to 74
  • For people who have smoked a pack a day for more than 30 years or two packs a day for more than 15 years

“By providing this low cost screening option we will be able to reach members of our community that are most at risk for Lung Cancer,” said Dr. Stuart Millstone, of Pulmonary and Critical Care Associates located in Orange Park. “Individuals who fall outside of these guidelines may also be at significant increased risk for lung cancer, particularly with heavy tobacco use, and certain occupational exposures (asbestos, silica, etc.) They may still contact Consult-A-Nurse to discuss.”

In Florida, more than 17,000 patients are diagnosed with lung cancer each year. Every year, lung cancer kills more people than colon, prostate and breast cancer combined. Early detection and diagnosis can provide for quicker treatment and greater chances for recovery. Orange Park Medical Center is the most advanced lung cancer center in the region providing state-of-the-art diagnostic technology, highly trained specialists and the latest treatment options.

For any questions or to schedule the $99 screening, call Consult-A-Nurse at 1-800-889-3627. The screenings are available seven days a week at Orange Park Medical Center or Monday-Friday at Fleming Island Imaging Center.
